Significant Land Allocation for Agricultural Development

Mangaldai, Jan 1: On Wednesday, the administration of Darrang district announced the transfer of an additional 3,709 bighas of government land from riverine and char regions to the Garukhuti Multi-Purpose Agriculture Project, increasing its total area to 11,279 bighas.

The land allocation process for this initiative commenced in 2023 with an initial 5,798 bighas, which was later expanded to 7,853 bighas in 2024, followed by an additional 250 bighas in October 2025. Furthermore, 533 bighas have been designated for the Fisheries Department to establish an Integrated Aqua Park.

This ongoing expansion, from 5,798 bighas to 11,279 bighas, is attributed to the visionary leadership of Padma Hazarika, who chairs the project management committee, along with the dedicated efforts of the Darrang district administration, including the current District Commissioner, Parag Kumar Kakaty.

The Garukhuti project is thus playing a crucial role in transforming reclaimed land into a sustainable agricultural hub, focusing on agriculture, dairy farming, and fisheries, which empowers local youth and enhances the overall agro-economy.
