A Rainy Evening of Polo Action

The renowned Jaipur Polo Grounds hosted an exciting exhibition match as part of the Indian Open Polo Championship, featuring teams Jindal Panther and Jaipur - Optiemus Achievers. Despite the rain-soaked conditions, nearly 1,000 attendees, including dignitaries, students from Maharaja Agrasen Medical College, and children from the Prayas juvenile aid centre, gathered to enjoy the thrilling polo match.

Chukker Highlights

The match kicked off with Jaipur - Optiemus Achievers taking an early lead, thanks to Alejo Aramburu and Sawai Padmanabh Singh, who each scored two goals in the first chukker. Jindal Panther fought back with goals from Juan Gris Zavaleta and Ramiro Zavaleta, but ended the first chukker trailing 4-2.

In the second chukker, the Achievers maintained their dominance, with Aramburu scoring again, bringing the score to 5-2.

Jindal Panther made a strong effort in the third chukker, with goals from Juan Gris Zavaleta and Naveen Jindal narrowing the gap to 5-4. However, Jaipur - Optiemus Achievers quickly responded with goals from Sawai Padmanabh Singh and Pratap Singh Kanota, ending the first half at 7-4.

After halftime, Sawai Padmanabh Singh continued his impressive performance, scoring twice in the fourth chukker, while Juan Gris Zavaleta added one for Jindal Panther, making the score 9-5.

Match Abandoned Due to Weather

As the rain persisted, the playing conditions deteriorated. Although the fifth chukker was completed with Naveen Jindal scoring, the worsening weather made it unsafe to continue. Consequently, the match was called off before the sixth chukker could take place. Despite the abrupt ending, the event showcased the excitement of polo, with fans braving the elements to witness the sport at a historic venue.

Naveen Jindal Discusses Polo's Heritage

Post-match, Naveen Jindal expressed his sentiments about the Jaipur Polo Grounds, stating, "This venue is steeped in history, having hosted polo for over a century. It is the heart of Indian polo and home to the Indian Polo Association. Polo originated in Manipur and has become a global sport. The Indian Open Championship is our pinnacle event, akin to a World Cup at the 14-goal level. Unfortunately, the heavy rain made conditions unsafe for play, necessitating the match's early conclusion."

The Importance of Quality Horses

Jindal further elaborated, "Each player typically brings 8 to 10 horses, and today we had around 70 to 75 horses on the field, many of which are world-class breeds from Argentina and New Zealand. These horses are exceptional athletes, requiring extensive care and training, along with a strong bond with their riders."

Polo's Growing Popularity

"It’s encouraging to see such a large crowd today, many experiencing polo for the first time. Watching is one thing, but being on the field with these magnificent horses is an entirely different experience. I believe polo will continue to expand its reach and attract millions more enthusiasts," Jindal concluded.
