Highlights from the Final Day
The concluding day of the National Senior Athletics Federation Cup 2026 showcased a blend of remarkable achievements and near misses. Shivam Lohakare stood out in the men's javelin throw, securing the title with a personal best of 81.71m, just shy of the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 82.61m. Competing at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi on Monday, the 24-year-old began with a throw of 74.31m and surpassed the 80m mark on his second attempt with 80.97m. He continued with throws of 79.21m, 80.38m, and 80.01m, ultimately achieving his best in the final round. Lohakare was the only competitor to record four throws exceeding 80m. Yashvir Singh followed in second place with 80.80m, while Rohit Yadav took third with 80.40m. Despite being a favorite, Asian Championships silver medallist Sachin Yadav finished fifth with 79.07m, having previously thrown 86.27m at last year's World Championships. Neeraj Chopra still holds the national record with a throw of 90.23m.
Men's Events Performance Overview
In the men's shot put, Samardeep Singh Gill triumphed with a throw of 20.46m, comfortably surpassing the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 20.36m. Two-time Asian Games gold medalist Tajinderpal Singh Toor secured second place with 20.07m, while Karanveer Singh finished third with 19.38m.
Sprint star Animesh Kujur narrowly missed qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in the men's 200m, clocking 20.64 seconds to win the race, just 0.03 seconds shy of the qualification mark. Jishnu Prasad PK came in second at 20.98 seconds, followed by Abhay Singh at 21.01 seconds. However, Kujur had already met the qualification standard in the men's 100m earlier in the event with a personal best of 10.15 seconds.
National record holder Praveen Chithravel delivered an impressive performance, winning the men's triple jump with a leap of 17.08m, exceeding the qualification mark of 16.89m. Commonwealth Games silver medallist Abdulla Aboobacker finished second with 16.63m, while Gailey Venister took third with 16.37m.
The men's 400m hurdles concluded with a thrilling finish as Yashas P clocked 49.00 seconds, narrowly beating Santhosh Kumar T, who finished at 49.06 seconds. Both athletes surpassed the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 50.27 seconds, with Subhas Das completing the podium at 50.51 seconds.
Women's Events Highlights
In the women's events, Seema claimed victory in the 5000m race with a time of 16:04.83, while Pooja won the women's 800m title with a time of 2:02.42. Khyati Mathur excelled in the women's high jump, clearing 1.82m, and Vithya Ramraj triumphed in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 56.61 seconds.
The Federation Cup served as the sole athletics selection trial for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
