Eviction Drive Launched in Hojai District to Clear Forest Encroachments
Major Eviction Operation Underway in Doboka
Hojai, Jan 2: A significant eviction initiative commenced early Thursday in Doboka, located in Hojai district, as local authorities aimed to remove illegal encroachments from the Jamuna Maudanga Reserved Forest.
This operation seeks to reclaim approximately 6,000 bighas of forest land that has been unlawfully occupied for several years.
Official reports indicate that around 1,250 families have settled on the reserved forest land.
Out of these, 152 families have ongoing cases in the Gauhati High Court and are temporarily exempt from the eviction process. The remaining 1,098 families are being evicted following the completion of all necessary legal procedures.
To facilitate the operation and avert any incidents, extensive security measures have been implemented. Hundreds of personnel from the Assam Police and the CRPF have been deployed in the affected areas, along with over 50 JCB machines prepared for demolition tasks.
Prior to the official commencement of the eviction, many residents were observed dismantling their homes, shops, and temporary structures, leaving the area with their belongings. The atmosphere in and around Doboka remains tense but manageable.
Meanwhile, MK Yadav, the Special Chief Secretary of the Forest department, has arrived in Doboka to oversee and monitor the eviction process, emphasizing the government's commitment to forest conservation.
However, the eviction drive has sparked reactions from various political factions and organizations within Hojai district. Some groups have accused the government of having political motives behind the action and are calling for adequate rehabilitation for the displaced families.
The administration has reiterated that the drive is being conducted in strict compliance with legal regulations to safeguard reserved forest land.
