Renewable Energy Initiatives in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The South African firm Eveready has expressed a keen interest in establishing wind turbines across various districts in Odisha. This proposal was presented during a significant meeting focused on renewable energy, which took place on Tuesday and was led by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo.

During the meeting, Singh Deo emphasized India's extensive experience in wind energy spanning over four decades and stressed the critical need to combine wind and solar energy to maintain grid stability.

He remarked, "With its extensive coastline and unutilized hilltops, Odisha is ideally situated to enhance its renewable energy initiatives."

As the Deputy CM and the head of the Energy portfolio, he noted that Odisha is diligently pursuing its renewable energy goals for both wind and solar sectors by leveraging its natural assets.

The discussions centered on the potential for production, the challenges faced, and practical strategies to boost wind energy generation in alignment with India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Sources indicate that the objective is to derive 50% of the nation's installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

The meeting saw participation from senior officials across various departments, including the Energy Department, GRIDCO, Agriculture, Irrigation, and Water Resources, with notable attendees like Principal Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev and GRIDCO MD Satyapriya Rath.
