Evacuation Orders Issued Following Chemical Leak in California
Chemical Leak Triggers Evacuations in Multiple Cities
A significant evacuation order has been implemented in parts of Garden Grove, Stanton, Cypress, and Buena Park due to a chemical leak from a storage tank at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove, as reported by officials. The incident unfolded around 3:30 PM local time on Thursday when firefighters were called to address a vapor release at a site located on the 12100 block of Western Avenue, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. The leak originated from a 34,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate, a chemical frequently utilized in plastic manufacturing. Initial evacuation directives affected areas north of Garden Grove Boulevard, east of Springdale Avenue, west of Dale Street, and south of Orangewood Avenue. Residents were instructed to head to a reunification center set up at Rancho Alamitos High School. Captain Sean Doran of the Orange County Fire Authority stated that the evacuation was necessary due to the chemical's potential flammability. "Whenever we issue an evacuation warning or shelter-in-place order, it is done with utmost caution, and we recognize the impact it has on our community," he conveyed to KNX News.
Doran emphasized that asking the community to evacuate is a significant request. The evacuation also enabled emergency teams to safely deploy specialized resources required to manage the situation. Residents were briefly permitted to return home during the early hours of Friday; however, evacuation orders were reinstated around 6:30 AM due to what officials termed "changing conditions." By 10:43 AM, authorities had revised and expanded the evacuation zone to encompass areas north of Trask Avenue, south of Ball Road, east of Valley View Street, and west of Dale Street. Road closures remained in effect near Western and Chapman avenues as cleanup efforts and investigations continued. The Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center, along with Stanton City Hall and Community Center, were designated as evacuation centers. Additionally, the Garden Grove Unified School District announced the closure of several schools on Friday due to the leak, affecting campuses such as Barker Elementary, Bryant, Carver, Enders Elementary, Garden Park, Lawrence Elementary, Wakeham Elementary, Patton Elementary, Bell Intermediate, Alamitos Intermediate, Pacifica High School, Rancho Alamitos High School, Skylark Preschool, the district’s Maintenance and Operations Facility, and the Lampson Bus Yard.
