Eruption of Haile Gubbi Volcano Raises Global Concerns

After lying dormant for 12,000 years, the Haile Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia has erupted, raising alarms in several nations. Reports indicate that a thick layer of ash has spread thousands of kilometers, affecting countries such as India, Pakistan, Yemen, and Oman. Consequently, numerous international flights have been canceled or redirected due to the ash fallout.

The Haile Gubbi volcano is located in the Rift Valley region, an area characterized by constant geological activity due to the convergence of two tectonic plates. The eruption began around 1:30 PM Indian Standard Time on Sunday, sending plumes of smoke and ash soaring approximately 14 kilometers into the atmosphere.

According to the Toulouse VAAC, although the eruption has ceased, a significant ash cloud continues to drift towards northern India, prompting meteorological and aviation agencies to closely monitor its trajectory. This volcano is part of the Erta Ale mountain range, with its last known eruption occurring between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago.

Due to the ash cloud, airlines such as Indigo, Akasa Air, and KLM have had to cancel several flights. Meanwhile, India's aviation regulator, the DGCA, has advised airlines to avoid affected areas and make necessary adjustments to flight planning, routing, and fuel management.

Air India has reported that none of its flights have been impacted so far, but they are actively monitoring the situation. SpiceJet has also indicated that volcanic ash could affect some international routes, advising passengers traveling to Dubai to check their flight status. Both Akasa Air and Indigo have emphasized safety as their top priority, stating they are keeping a close watch on developments and will take necessary actions as per guidelines.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai has issued an advisory for travelers, warning that the eruption in Ethiopia may affect certain international flights. Passengers are encouraged to contact their airlines before heading to the airport.
