Exciting Start to Chess at EWC 2026

The group stage of the Chess competition at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 is set to begin on Wednesday, featuring 16 elite players vying for the championship and a share of the impressive $1.5 million (approximately Rs 14.3 crore) prize pool. In Group A, India's representatives, Grandmasters Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin, will face off in a rematch of last year's opening match. Additionally, fellow Indian Grandmaster Pranesh M will kick off his tournament against Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov, as per the EWC press release. Meanwhile, Polish Grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda will compete against Benjamin Bok, who qualified via the India Rising qualifier. EWC 2025 runner-up Alireza Firouzja will also meet Wei Yi, who earned his spot through the Last Chance Qualifier and Play-Ins, in another repeat of last year's group stage.

Group B Highlights

Group B showcases defending champion Magnus Carlsen from Team Liquid, who will start his title defense against Andrey Esipenko, who advanced through the Play-Ins. American speed-chess star Hikaru Nakamura is set to compete against Alexey Sarana, who is making his debut in the EWC group stage. Hans Moke Niemann, representing the Indian organization GodLike Esports, will take on Ian Nepomniachtchi, who reached the EWC Playoffs last year. The remaining match in this group will feature newcomers Denis Lazavik and Sina Movahed facing off.

Tournament Format

The Group Stage will unfold on August 12 and 13, with each match consisting of two games played under a 10-minute time control without any increment. In case of a tie, an Armageddon game will be played as a tiebreaker, with players competing in double-elimination brackets using the same match format. The top four players from each group will progress to the Playoffs.

The Playoffs are scheduled for August 14 and 15, featuring a single-elimination bracket. The quarterfinals will consist of four games, followed by six-game semifinals, while the Grand Final will be determined through a best-of-three sets format. The first two sets will include four games each, with a potential third set comprising two games.

Aravindh Chithambaram from S8UL Esports exited during the Play-Ins but earned $23,000 (around Rs 21.9 lakh) for his efforts at EWC 2026.
