Violence Erupts in Kangpokpi District

A security vehicle was reportedly attacked and caught fire after a petrol bomb was hurled at it.

Kangpokpi, Sept 20: Tensions flared in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Saturday following the arrest of six individuals linked to recent violence in Chawangkining. Protesters clashed with security forces, obstructed National Highway-2, and targeted security vehicles.

The unrest persisted into the night, necessitating a significant security presence in sensitive areas throughout the district. An emergency bandh was declared, further hindering normal activities and movement.

The arrested individuals, identified as Seilet, Manglen, Sathao, Lenlal, Gin, and Chuchung, were taken into custody by a CoBRA unit of the CRPF near Kholep village around 4:30 PM on Saturday.

This action prompted local residents, including women, to rally for their release.

As security forces attempted to transport the detainees to Imphal, protesters blocked roads at Motbung and other locations along NH-2. The situation escalated into violence, with demonstrators reportedly setting tires ablaze and throwing stones and petrol bombs at security personnel. A security vehicle was set on fire after being struck by a petrol bomb.

In response, security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd as clashes intensified.

Protesters also attempted to advance towards the CRPF camp at Chawangkining, demanding the release of the six individuals in custody. At Motbung, they reportedly used JCB machines to dig up parts of NH-2, effectively obstructing the movement of security forces and causing significant disruption to traffic.

The unrest spread beyond Kangpokpi and Motbung, with reports of heightened tensions and mobilization in several Kuki-majority areas, including Saikul, Sapormeina, Gamgiphai, and Taphou.

Several individuals were taken to a local hospital due to injuries sustained during the clashes, although the extent of their injuries remains unclear.

Protesters alleged that security forces fired live ammunition during the confrontations, a claim that has yet to be independently verified.

This latest outbreak of violence follows an attack on Chawangkining Naga village on September 15, where armed assailants reportedly opened fire on CRPF personnel and set two houses ablaze.

As of late Saturday night, the situation remained tense, with security forces maintaining a strong presence in sensitive areas across the district.
