In Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that over 100 Russian drones targeted various locations in Ukraine on Wednesday, following a missile attack that resulted in at least eight fatalities. He stated, "Russia's strikes are ongoing and increasingly audacious, specifically aiming at our railway systems and civilian areas within our cities."

Despite Ukraine's recent military successes, Moscow's aggression remains relentless. Both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have suggested, without substantiation, that the ongoing conflict could be nearing its conclusion.

The overnight assaults focused on residential and railway infrastructure in central Dnipro and northeastern Kharkiv, as well as port facilities in southern Odesa and energy sites in central Poltava, according to Zelenskyy. He noted that 14 regions were attacked throughout the previous day.

Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of global support for Ukraine, warning that a lack of media coverage on the war emboldens Russia to escalate its brutality, particularly as attention shifts to the conflict in Iran.

Leaders Discuss Potential Peace

Trump expressed optimism on Tuesday, stating that he believes a resolution between Moscow and Kyiv is imminent. He remarked, "The end of the war in Ukraine is getting very close, believe it or not."

Putin, in a recent address, hinted that the invasion might be nearing its conclusion. However, neither leader provided details on what led them to believe in the possibility of peace in this prolonged conflict.

US-led diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the war have stalled, failing to address critical issues such as the fate of the territories Russia has seized and how to prevent future invasions.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated on Wednesday that Moscow's core demands remain unchanged, insisting that Ukraine withdraw its forces from the four regions—Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—that Russia illegally annexed in September 2022 but has not fully controlled.

Peskov stated, "Once that occurs, a ceasefire can be established, allowing both parties to engage in negotiations, which will undoubtedly be intricate and involve numerous significant details."

Shifting Dynamics on the Battlefield

The balance of power in the conflict has shifted in recent months. Ukraine has transitioned from seeking international assistance to offering its expertise to other nations on countering attacks, largely due to its advancements in drone technology.

Ukrainian long-range drone and missile strikes have successfully targeted energy facilities and manufacturing sites deep within Russia, with three regions reporting attacks on Wednesday. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 286 Ukrainian drones across various regions, including the illegally annexed Crimean Peninsula.

On the extensive 1,250-kilometer front line, the progress of Russia's larger and better-equipped forces has been slowing since October, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

The Russian spring offensive has faltered, with Russian troops experiencing a net loss of territory last month for the first time since 2024. The ISW noted, "Ukrainian defensive lines are holding firm, and Ukrainian forces have begun to regain tactical initiative in several areas, even as Russia suffers significant manpower losses for minimal territorial gains."
