Intensifying Airstrikes and Retaliation

Dubai: Israel has significantly increased its airstrikes targeting Iranian missile facilities and launch sites as of Tuesday, prompting Iran to respond with attacks across the Gulf region, which have disrupted energy supplies and travel.

Explosions were reported in Tehran and Lebanon, where Israel claimed to have targeted Hezbollah militants. Additionally, the American embassy in Saudi Arabia faced a drone assault.

As the conflict enters its fourth day, President Donald Trump indicated that the war could extend for weeks or even longer, with casualties numbering in the hundreds, predominantly in Iran, where an internet blackout has hampered information flow.

The escalating conflict raises concerns about its duration and resolution. Trump hinted at the possibility of increased US military involvement, stating he was not dismissing the idea of deploying ground troops.

The US administration has outlined various objectives. Initial strikes resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while Trump encouraged Iranians to revolt against their government. However, senior officials later clarified that regime change was not the primary aim.

On Monday, Trump articulated four military objectives: dismantling Iran's missile capabilities, destroying its navy, preventing nuclear weapon acquisition, and halting support for allied militant groups.

Throughout the night into Tuesday, Tehran experienced continuous explosions, with aircraft flying overhead.

The Israeli military reported conducting a series of airstrikes on facilities in Tehran and Isfahan that manufacture and store ballistic missiles.

According to Iranian state television, strikes caused two explosions at a broadcasting facility in Tehran, but no injuries were reported.

The International Atomic Energy Agency noted that Iran's Natanz nuclear enrichment site had suffered "some recent damage," although no radiological consequences were anticipated.

The US had previously targeted Natanz during the 12-day conflict in June, significantly impairing Iran's nuclear program.

Despite this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Iran was establishing "new sites, new places" underground for nuclear weapon production, although he provided no evidence for this claim.

Iran maintains that it has not enriched uranium since June, asserting its nuclear program is peaceful.

Satellite imagery analyzed by The Associated Press indicated limited activity at two Iranian nuclear sites prior to the conflict, suggesting Tehran was likely assessing damage from previous strikes and attempting to salvage remaining resources.

A resident of north Tehran described escalating fears as the city faced heavy bombardment.

Communication lines into Iran remain unstable, with the internet largely inaccessible. The resident communicated with The Associated Press before dawn on Tuesday, requesting anonymity.

He recounted a significant explosion that shook his building on Monday, stating, "I was by the window and felt the shock wave. Pretty scary, then saw the smoke."

Most shops in the usually busy Tajrish area were closed, he noted. Following Khamenei's death, Iran declared an official mourning period.

While bakeries remained open and supermarkets were stocked, ATMs were largely "out of cash." Iran's economy was already in decline, with the currency hitting record lows in December.

A drone attack on the US Embassy in Riyadh resulted in a "limited fire," according to Saudi Arabia's Defense Ministry, prompting the embassy to advise Americans to avoid the compound.

This incident followed an attack on the US Embassy in Kuwait, with both embassies currently closed to the public.

The US State Department has ordered the evacuation of non-emergency personnel and families from Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.

Furthermore, the US has urged citizens to leave over a dozen Middle Eastern nations, but many remain stranded due to closed airspace. Several other countries have organized evacuation flights for their nationals.

The US-Israeli strikes have reportedly resulted in at least 787 fatalities, as per the Iranian Red Crescent Society. In Israel, where Iranian missiles have hit various locations, 11 individuals have died. The Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah has also targeted Israel, leading to 52 deaths in Lebanon from retaliatory strikes.

The US military confirmed the deaths of six American service members, while three fatalities occurred in the United Arab Emirates, and one each in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Iran has retaliated against several nations considered safe havens in the Middle East following the US-Israeli strikes. Recent targets included two Amazon data centers in the UAE and one in Bahrain. The UAE centers were struck, while a drone attack near Bahrain caused damage, according to the company.

Iran has also targeted energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, as well as several vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for one-fifth of global oil trade, leading to a surge in oil and natural gas prices.

"The Strait of Hormuz is closed," declared Iranian Brig Gen Ebrahim Jabbari, an advisor to the Revolutionary Guard, threatening to set ablaze any ships attempting to pass through.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari asserted that Iranian assaults on the gas-rich nation "will not go unanswered."

As oil and natural gas prices soared, stock markets experienced sharp declines.

The conflict has extended to Lebanon, where Hezbollah launched missiles at Israel on Monday, prompting Israeli retaliation.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military conducted airstrikes in Beirut and reported the deployment of additional troops into southern Lebanon, establishing new positions near the border.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon later observed Israeli troops entering and exiting Lebanon.
