Yaounde, September 8: Armed separatist groups have initiated a weeklong lockdown in the conflict-ridden English-speaking regions of Northwest and Southwest Cameroon, resulting in increased violence, according to local residents and security reports.

Separatist leaders declared on social media that the lockdown, which commenced on Monday, is intended to disrupt the beginning of the new academic year, as reported by a news agency.

In Bamenda, the capital of the Northwest Region, locals reported a climate of fear, with schools shuttered and movement heavily restricted.

One anonymous resident shared, "We heard gunfire. There is a palpable sense of fear. The streets are empty, shops are closed, and nearly all activities have ceased."

In a video released online on Sunday, armed separatists warned they would "kill anyone who dares to venture out" during the lockdown.

In response, security forces have increased troop presence in both regions, conducting patrols around the clock. Regional authorities reassured residents on Sunday that security measures have been enhanced and encouraged them to carry on with their daily lives.

The Northwest and Southwest regions have been embroiled in conflict since 2017, when separatists began their struggle against government forces for the establishment of an independent state.

In July, seven individuals were abducted in the Northwest region while traveling from Bafoussam to Bamenda, with armed assailants intercepting their vehicle.

Family members reported that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom for their release.

Kidnappings for ransom are prevalent in the English-speaking Northwest, where separatists frequently clash with government troops in their quest for independence.

Authorities indicate that travelers are often targeted by gunmen believed to be separatist fighters.

In June, approximately 12 individuals, including 10 bus passengers, were kidnapped by suspected separatists in the Northwest Region, where the armed conflict persists, according to local sources.

The bus was en route from Ndop to Bamenda when it was ambushed by armed men.
