Escalating Protests in Pakistan Following Iranian Leader's Death
Intensifying Unrest in the Middle East
Tensions in the Middle East have reached a boiling point following the reported death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to an Israeli-American attack. This incident has triggered significant upheaval across the region, with the most pronounced effects now being felt in Pakistan. Major cities in Pakistan have erupted in large-scale protests, with Karachi witnessing the most violence as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets.
Violent Clashes Erupt in Karachi
In Karachi, a crowd advancing towards the American consulate began vandalizing property along the way. Protesters marched from Sultanabad through Mai Kolachi Road, and the situation escalated to the point where security forces resorted to using tear gas to disperse the crowd. Despite these efforts, the situation remained uncontrollable. Reports indicate that the situation deteriorated further when American military personnel opened fire on the protesters, resulting in multiple fatalities among the Pakistani crowd. In retaliation, demonstrators launched attacks against the police.
Widespread Protests Across Pakistan
The death toll from the violence has been rising, with reports confirming that at least 16 individuals have died in Karachi alone. However, the unrest is not confined to Karachi; significant protests have also erupted in other cities, including Lahore, Islamabad, and northern regions, in response to Khamenei's death. A particularly shocking incident occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan, a region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. In the Shia-majority city of Skardu, demonstrators targeted several government and international institutions, even setting fire to the United Nations office, highlighting the impotence of the Pakistani military in the region.
