Rising Tensions Ahead of Elections

Raha/Sonitpur, Mar 28: On Saturday, Assam witnessed a surge in pre-election tensions, with violent confrontations occurring in Sonitpur and Nagaon districts as election campaigning intensified.

In a recent incident in the Naduar Assembly constituency of Sonitpur district, BJP member Prince Saikia and several others reportedly suffered injuries during an alleged attack while campaigning in Tupia, heightening the conflict between the BJP and Congress.

Sources indicate that the unrest began on Friday evening when Congress supporters campaigning for candidate Sunil Chetry were reportedly assaulted, provoking strong reactions from party members and local residents.

On Saturday, former MLA Praneswar Basumatary was campaigning in the area when he faced obstruction, leading to clashes between opposing factions.

Injuries were reported among workers from both parties, and several vehicles were damaged during the altercations.

Separately, clashes erupted in the Barhampur Assembly constituency of Nagaon district on Friday night.

Reports indicate that violence occurred at Barchungjar near Chapanala, where a group of BJP supporters allegedly vandalized an election office belonging to the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and assaulted the party workers present.

This incident prompted retaliation from AJP members, resulting in further confrontations between the two groups.

Injuries were reported on both sides, and police arrived to restore order, according to sources.

The AJP has accused BJP members of instigating the violence, claiming the attack was premeditated.

Authorities are closely observing the situation as campaigning progresses across the state in anticipation of polling day.

As of the time of this report, police had not released any official statements regarding the incidents.
