Eric Swalwell Announces Resignation Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Swalwell's Decision to Step Down
On Monday, Eric Swalwell declared his intention to resign from Congress following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, which reportedly involve former staff members. In his statement, Swalwell expressed regret for what he termed "errors in judgment" but asserted that he would challenge what he described as a "serious, false allegation." He stated, "I am profoundly sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for the mistakes I have made in the past. I will vigorously contest the serious, false allegation against me."
Swalwell emphasized that while he opposes the removal of lawmakers without due process, he felt that resigning was essential to prevent distractions from his responsibilities. He remarked, "It’s also inappropriate for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress," and assured that he would collaborate with his staff to maintain service continuity in California’s 14th congressional district.
This announcement follows increasing pressure from fellow Democrats urging Swalwell to resign or face potential expulsion. Andrea Salinas remarked that the allegations are "serious, credible, and demand accountability," stressing that the halls of power should not protect predators through inaction.
The congressional ethics committee has confirmed the initiation of an investigation into whether Swalwell breached House rules. Reports indicate that four women have accused him of sexual misconduct, with one former staff member alleging sexual assault, while others reported behaviors ranging from unsolicited images to non-consensual sexual contact.
Just a day prior, Swalwell had suspended his campaign for governor of California, again apologizing for his past actions while insisting that some allegations are false. He is among four congressional members—two Democrats and two Republicans—facing increasing scrutiny over various controversies, including Tony Gonzales, who recently halted his re-election campaign amid allegations of an affair with a former staff member who tragically died by suicide.
