England Women's Cricket Team Heads to South Africa for Training Camp
Training Camp Announcement
The England Women's cricket team is set to travel to South Africa for a training camp, following the cancellation of their planned preparatory tour to Abu Dhabi due to security concerns in the Middle East.
Intra-Squad Series Overview
In Pretoria, a squad of 30 players will be split into two teams for a five-match intra-squad series from March 10 to March 27. The teams, named Team Brittin and Team Heyhoe-Flint, honor former England cricketers Jan Brittin and Rachael Heyhoe-Flint, both of whom celebrated Women's World Cup victories on home soil.
Leadership and Goals
Team Brittin will be captained by Nat Sciver-Brunt, with Jon Lewis serving as the coach. Charlie Dean will lead Team Heyhoe-Flint, coached by Luke Williams. Head coach Charlotte Edwards will oversee both teams during the camp, emphasizing that this series is a vital chance for players to showcase their skills ahead of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, which England will host later this year.
Emerging Talents
The squad includes eight players who have yet to make their senior debuts for England. Notably, 19-year-old opener Davina Perrin gained recognition for her impressive 43-ball century for Northern Superchargers in last year's The Hundred. Additionally, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, a young left-arm spinner with an impressive economy rate of 5.75 and 11 wickets in the same tournament, has been selected. Other notable inclusions are former England Under-19 captain Grace Scrivens, Alexa Stonehouse, Grace Potts, Jodi Grewcock, Lancashire captain Ellie Threlkeld, and wicketkeeper-batter Rhianna Southby.
Injury Report
Unfortunately, leg-spinner Sarah Glenn will miss the camp due to a fractured finger sustained during training in February.
Preparation for the T20 World Cup
This training camp marks England's second visit to South Africa this year, following earlier skill-based training sessions in Oman in January and Stellenbosch last month. According to Edwards, the series in Pretoria aims to enhance the competitive aspect of the team's preparations for a demanding international season.
Upcoming Matches
Before the Women's T20 World Cup, scheduled from June 12 to July 5, England will host New Zealand and India in white-ball series. Additionally, the team is set to play India in a historic women's Test match at Lord's later this season.
