On the inaugural day of the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 held in Hyderabad, Telangana, England showcased their strength by defeating Italy with a convincing score of 5-2. Meanwhile, Korea secured a narrow victory over Austria, winning 1-0 at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground (Gachibowli Hockey Complex) on Sunday. The goals for England came from Grace Balsdon (12', 32'), Lottie Bingham (15'), Elizabeth Neal (16'), and Anna Toman (27'), while Italy's Ivanna Pessina (19') and Federica Carta managed to score for their team.
In the second match, Seona Kim (34') emerged as the sole scorer for Korea, as reported in an official release.
Later in the day, Scotland is set to compete against Wales, and the host nation, India, will take on Uruguay.
Race for World Cup 2026 Qualification Begins
The Indian Women's Hockey Team is gearing up to secure a place in the upcoming FIH Hockey Women's World Cup 2026, starting their campaign in the qualifiers on March 8 in Hyderabad, Telangana.
As per Hockey India, the tournament will feature eight teams: hosts India, along with England, Scotland, Korea, Italy, Uruguay, Wales, and Austria, all vying for three prestigious qualification spots for the global event.
Three direct World Cup berths are available in Hyderabad, with the top three teams in the tournament earning their spots for the 2026 edition.
The forthcoming World Cup will include 16 teams in both men's and women's categories, with nine teams already qualified, setting the stage for an intense qualification battle.
Tournament Format and Path to Qualification
The tournament is structured into two pools of four teams each, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semifinals. The winners of both semifinals, along with the Bronze medal match victor, will automatically qualify for the World Cup. Additionally, the highest-ranked team finishing fourth in Hyderabad will also secure a spot in the tournament.
Pool Groupings
The teams are organized into two pools: Pool A consists of England, Korea, Italy, and Austria, while Pool B includes hosts India, Scotland, Uruguay, and Wales.
