Enforcement Directorate Expands Investigation into Kolkata Police Corruption Case
Fresh Raids in Kolkata Linked to Money Laundering Investigation
Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated new searches across various locations in West Bengal as part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering involving former Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas and an alleged criminal, Biswajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, who were both apprehended earlier, according to officials.
The ED is currently conducting raids at nine locations, which include areas in Kasba, Chakraberia, and Royd Street in Kolkata, as well as Biswas's ancestral home in Kandi, Murshidabad.
Among the locations being searched are properties belonging to Mohammad Ali, known as Max Raju, Saurav Adhikari, Biswas's nephew, and Ruhil Amin Ali, a close associate of Biswas who serves as a Sub Inspector in the Kolkata Police.
The latest raids were prompted by information obtained during the interrogation of Sona Pappu and Biswas, both of whom are in ED custody, an official stated.
"We are investigating several locations associated with individuals allegedly involved in illegal land transactions and financial misconduct. We are currently reviewing documents, digital devices, and financial records," the official added.
In the Chakraberia area of south Kolkata, ED agents searched the home of a businessman believed to have connections with Poddar, as investigators look into his suspected involvement in coercive land acquisition and illicit financial activities.
Additionally, a hotel in the Royd Street area was searched after the manager was questioned. The establishment's owner has also been summoned to meet with investigators, another official reported.
In Kasba, the ED raided the residence of Kolkata Police Sub Inspector Ruhil Amin Ali, who previously held a position in a police welfare committee.
Ali is reportedly linked to business activities associated with Biswas's wife, according to the ED official.
Investigators are assessing whether the police officer played any part in the alleged land-related irregularities.
The search at Biswas's ancestral residence in Ward No. 8 of Kandi Municipality is ongoing. The house is reportedly occupied by his sister, Gauri Sinha Biswas, who serves as the vice-chairperson of the local civic body.
The house had been locked for nearly a week, as per ED officials.
After waiting for about two hours on Friday morning, ED agents forced entry into the premises to conduct their search.
Poddar was taken into custody by the ED on May 18 following questioning. Biswas was arrested the previous week, and a businessman named Joy S Kamdar was detained in this case back in April.
The ED previously indicated that Poddar is a "history sheeter" and is wanted for involvement in land grabbing cases in West Bengal.
His name first gained notoriety in 2015 due to a violent incident at the Ballygunge rail yard. Investigators have since uncovered multiple criminal charges against Poddar, including a murder case from 2017 and an alleged assault on rival Munna Pandey outside the Presidency Jail in 2021.
