Introduction to the Feminist Manifesto

Guwahati, March 8: In anticipation of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, a coalition comprising various women's organizations and civil society groups has unveiled the Feminist Manifesto: Assam 2026. This initiative calls on political entities to pledge specific actions aimed at safeguarding women's rights and promoting gender-equitable governance within the state.

Key Demands of the Manifesto

Launched just before International Women’s Day, the manifesto urges political parties and candidates to prioritize gender equality, safety, and inclusive development in their electoral platforms.

Voices from the Grassroots

During a press conference at the Gauhati Press Club, representatives from the Collective emphasized that the manifesto encapsulates the perspectives and issues faced by women and gender-diverse individuals throughout Assam. This was achieved through consultations with grassroots organizations that represent a diverse array of women, including farmers, vendors, informal workers, weavers, survivors of violence, micro-entrepreneurs, and women with disabilities, as well as those from indigenous and marginalized backgrounds.

Women’s Rights at the Forefront

The group highlighted that Assam is home to approximately 1.8 crore women who are entitled to equal rights. As the state approaches the 2026 Assembly elections, the Collective insists that the rights, dignity, and leadership of women must be central to political discussions.

Addressing Structural Inequalities

The manifesto points out that despite numerous welfare initiatives over the years, systemic inequalities remain entrenched, with a notable disparity between policy commitments and the lived experiences of women, especially those from tea garden communities, char areas, and other marginalized groups.

Priorities for Action

Among its primary concerns, the manifesto emphasizes the necessity for enhanced mechanisms to combat violence against women. It advocates for the effective enforcement of existing laws, improved support services for survivors, safer public infrastructure, and accountability measures to ensure prompt justice.

Climate Change and Gender

The document also addresses the gender-specific impacts of climate change in Assam, recognized as one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in India. It calls for women's leadership in climate governance, gender-sensitive disaster management strategies, and increased investment in climate-resilient livelihoods, particularly for communities affected by flooding and erosion.

Focus on Education and Livelihoods

On the education front, the Collective advocates for heightened public investment, improved facilities, and stronger community involvement in school governance. Additionally, ensuring livelihood security for women is a critical focus, with a call for greater representation of women in political and decision-making roles.
