Munish Sood from Mandi reports that Bhawna Devi, a single mother, is benefiting from the Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana, which is crucial for her children's education during tough financial times.
For Bhawna, the monthly assistance of ₹2,000 may seem modest, but it plays a vital role in supporting her two children’s schooling in Ambedkar Ward, Sundernagar.
As she raises her son Aryan, who is in Class VI, and daughter Ayesha, who is in Class VIII, Bhawna faces the challenge of managing household expenses while ensuring her children receive a quality education.
The financial burden of books, school fees, and other essentials often weighs heavily on her family. However, the Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana has provided some much-needed relief.
After learning about the program from an Anganwadi worker, Bhawna applied in 2024 and has since received ₹1,000 monthly for each child.
She expresses gratitude, stating, “This assistance has significantly eased my ability to care for my children and support their education. Previously, it was challenging to meet all their needs alone. Now, I feel supported and confident that their education won’t be compromised due to our financial situation.”
For Bhawna, the scheme's value lies not just in the financial aid but in the security it offers. This consistent support empowers her to fulfill her children's educational needs and plan for their future.
In Sundernagar, 435 children are currently benefiting from this initiative.
Bhawna’s experience reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that financial difficulties do not hinder children's education.
According to Poonam Chauhan, the Child Development Project Officer in Sundernagar, ₹53.53 lakh has been allocated for the 2026-27 period, aiding 435 children in the region.
Out of these, 402 children receive ₹1,000 monthly, while 33 are supported for higher education.
The program offers monthly financial assistance until the age of 18 for education, health, and nutritional needs, aiming to create a safety net for children from disadvantaged families.
The initiative also facilitates access to higher education for beneficiaries aged 18 to 27, covering tuition, hostel, and food expenses in government institutions.
In cases where hostel facilities are unavailable, students pursuing higher education can receive rental support of up to ₹3,000 monthly.
The scheme is available to permanent residents of Himachal Pradesh with an annual family income below ₹1 lakh, including children of widows, divorced, or destitute women, and those with parents suffering from significant disabilities.

SDM Sundernagar Amar Negi emphasized that welfare programs like the Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana and Mukhyamantri Sukh-Aashray Yojana aim to provide equal educational opportunities for children facing hardships.
