Smritika Negi’s initiative is dedicated to reuniting individuals with their families, and a significant breakthrough occurred when an Odia tattoo and fading memories helped resolve Pramila’s 35-year-old family mystery.

An Odia tattoo, along with fragments of her childhood memories and names of certain locations, served as vital clues in an emotional quest that culminated in Pramila, an Odisha native, reconnecting with her family via a video call after nearly 35 years.

This recent success is part of ‘Mission Apno Tak’, a project launched by Balh SDM Smritika Negi aimed at locating individuals who have lost contact with their families and facilitating their reunification.

The initiative has already led to numerous heartfelt family reunions, with Pramila’s story adding another poignant chapter to its narrative.

Pramila, known as Ramkali Malik in some records, hails from the Alupua panchayat in Kendrapara district, Odisha. Her life journey took her far from home, as she spent time in a mental health facility in Shimla from 2011 to 2018, followed by a stay at Nari Niketan before arriving at the Old Age Home in Bhangrotu, where she received ongoing care.

During a visit to the old age home, SDM Balh Smritika Negi, along with Tehsil Welfare Officer Dharmshila, began exploring the possibility of locating Pramila’s family.

Negi engaged with her patiently, encouraging her to share any memories she had of her identity, home, and family. Among the scattered clues was a name tattooed in Odia on her arm.

Pramila also recalled Cuttack and other locations in Odisha. These seemingly minor details became crucial leads, directing the search towards Kendrapara.

The search efforts expanded beyond Himachal Pradesh, with short videos of Pramila discussing her memories shared with Sabita Chanda and India Cares, who assisted in advancing the search in Odisha.

The Odisha Police played a significant role in following up and verifying the leads. Sabita Chanda reached out to Arun Bothra, IPS, ADG of Odisha Railway Police and Coastal Security, while Amit Kumar Malik from the Odisha Police helped facilitate the necessary connections.

Various individuals contributed at different stages, with Pranaya Raut and Raja Malik providing essential clues that brought the search closer to Pramila’s family.

After persistent efforts and thorough verification, her family in Odisha was finally located.

A Call That Ended 35 Years of Silence

The emotional climax occurred today when Pramila spoke to her family in Odisha through a video call after nearly three and a half decades.

For her family, witnessing her after so many years was an overwhelming experience, filled with tears of joy as they seized the opportunity to reconnect.

For Pramila, the call was equally meaningful — a chance to hear familiar voices and reconnect with the family and memories that had been buried under years of separation.

What began with an Odia tattoo, a few remembered place names, and fragments of a fading past ultimately led her back to her family.

This success underscores the importance of Mission Apno Tak, initiated by SDM Balh Smritika Negi as a compassionate effort to look beyond institutional records and help restore identities and family ties.

The mission’s latest achievement illustrates how a seemingly small clue, when pursued with patience, sensitivity, and collaboration across states, can open the door to a family that has been waiting for decades.
