Emmanuel Macron Calls for Respect at Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi
Macron's Unexpected Intervention
During the 2026 Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly interrupted a session to address what he perceived as a "lack of respect" from the audience. This incident occurred at the University of Nairobi during the youth-oriented "Inspire and Connect" segment of the summit. Footage shared by a news agency captured Macron standing up and making his way to the stage while a speaker was presenting. One of the panelists humorously remarked, "Already?" as Macron approached, noting he wasn't waiting for his turn.
Upon reaching the microphone, Macron attempted to quiet the crowd by repeatedly saying "Hey". He expressed his frustration, stating, "Excuse me everybody, I’m sorry guys but it’s impossible to speak about culture, to have people like that, super inspired, coming here, making a speech, with such a noise." He further emphasized, "This is a total lack of respect, so I suggest if you want to have bilaterals or speak about something else, you have bilateral rooms or you go outside." His comments were met with applause from segments of the audience.
Macron concluded his remarks by stating, "If you want to stay here, we listen to the people and we’re playing the same game." The Africa Forward Summit, co-hosted by Kenya and France, aims to foster collaboration between African nations and global partners. Organizers of the event highlight its goal to showcase Africa's innovative potential and promote transformative partnerships through multilateral cooperation. The summit is attended by over 30 leaders from African nations, business leaders, and young entrepreneurs.
Earlier in his visit to Kenya, Macron shared a video on social media where he was seen dancing during a welcome ceremony while attendees sang "Hakuna Matata." He captioned the clip with "Jambo" and "Africa Forward!" Additionally, he posted another video of himself engaging with schoolchildren and jogging alongside Kenyan marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, stating, "Made new friends today!"
