Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Wimbledon Due to Stress Fracture
Raducanu's Withdrawal Announcement
Emma Raducanu has officially withdrawn from Wimbledon after medical scans confirmed that the leg issue she had been dealing with is a stress fracture. The British No. 1 had spoken to the media at the All England Club on Sunday, expressing her intention to compete against Antonia Ruzic in her first-round match scheduled for Monday on Court One, as reported by ESPN.
Medical Assessment Reveals Severity
However, a subsequent medical evaluation later that evening indicated that the injury was more severe than initially thought, leading Raducanu to withdraw from her home Grand Slam for the second time in four years.
Raducanu's Personal Statement
In an Instagram post, the 23-year-old expressed her disappointment, stating, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but sadly I've had to withdraw from this year's Wimbledon. I've done everything possible to try to get to the start line tomorrow, but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I've been managing has developed into a stress fracture, and I've been medically advised to stop pushing through."
"Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process. I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement. Especially at a time like this, it is invaluable. I look forward to seeing you when I'm back," she concluded.
Concerns About Raducanu's Fitness
Raducanu's injury concerns first came to light on Wednesday when she was spotted wearing a protective boot. She did not return to practice until Saturday, where she trained with significant strapping on her lower right leg.
During her practice session, the British No. 1 appeared to move cautiously and had to cut her practice short against Russia's Anna Kalinskaya after losing four consecutive games, raising further doubts about her fitness ahead of Wimbledon.
