Emergency Measures Implemented in Sadiya Due to African Swine Fever Outbreak

In response to the detection of African Swine Fever in North Rangpuria village, the Tinsukia district administration has implemented strict emergency measures in Sadiya. The area has been designated as an infected zone, with culling operations underway and a complete ban on pork trade for 30 days. Authorities emphasize the importance of public cooperation to prevent further spread of the disease, which, while not harmful to humans, poses a significant threat to pig populations and the livelihoods of farmers. Sadiya, May 28: Following the identification of African Swine Fever (ASF) in North Rangpuria village, the Tinsukia district administration has enacted stringent emergency protocols in the Sadiya co-district to mitigate the risk of this highly contagious disease spreading among pigs.

In response to the outbreak confirmation, District Commissioner and District Magistrate Sumit Sattawan issued an order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, implementing restrictions throughout the affected area and its surroundings.

As per the official directive from the Revenue and Disaster Management Branch of the Deputy Commissioner’s office dated May 26, North Rangpuria village has been identified as the outbreak's epicenter.

An infected zone has been established within a one-kilometre radius of the village, while a surveillance zone has been designated within a 10-km radius.

The administration's actions were guided by recommendations from the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer, Tinsukia, in line with the National Action Plan for the Preparedness, Control, and Containment of African Swine Fever.

To contain the outbreak, culling operations are scheduled from May 27 to May 29 in the infected zone. This process is being overseen by officials from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, adhering to strict protocols for disposal, sanitization, and record-keeping.

A complete ban on the trade and transportation of pork in the Sadiya co-district has been enforced for the next 30 days or until further notice.

  • All pork shops and outlets in Sadiya co-district will remain closed.

  • The sale of pork meat in shops and markets is prohibited.

  • Transportation of pigs and pork products from Sadiya to other districts and neighboring Arunachal Pradesh is banned.

  • Movement of pigs into the affected area is restricted to prevent further spread.

Officials have warned that any violations of this order will result in legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

While ASF does not affect humans and poses no direct health risk, it is highly contagious and often fatal for domestic pigs and wild boars, leading to significant economic losses for farmers and traders.

Authorities have urged the public, particularly pig farmers and traders, to remain calm and fully cooperate with veterinary and district officials during this containment effort.

“These restrictions are in place for the greater public good to swiftly contain the disease's spread. Public cooperation is crucial to prevent the outbreak from extending to nearby areas,” officials emphasized.

Residents needing assistance or information about the outbreak can reach out to the Animal Husbandry Department helpline at 1962 or the District Control Room at 0374-2331000.
