In a significant political move, President Asif Ali Zardari has declared a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where Imran Khan's PTI party governs. This decision follows a federal cabinet meeting addressing the province's deteriorating security situation. As Khan remains imprisoned on corruption charges, the political landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve, with his supporters rallying behind him amid ongoing unrest.

Emergency Measures Implemented in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

In Lahore, the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, has declared a state of emergency and imposed governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is in power. According to a statement from the President's office, this decision was made under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution. These provisions were enacted immediately following a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during which the current situation in the province was discussed.

The Prime Minister's office released a statement indicating that cabinet members assessed the situation and concluded that the provincial government was deliberately distancing itself from the fight against terrorism.

Emergency Following Protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Just days prior, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa intensified PTI's mobilization efforts against the federal government and military, advocating for the release of Imran Khan and other imprisoned PTI leaders. Addressing the youth of the nation, Afridi proclaimed that victory would belong to Imran Khan and the youth of Pakistan.

Criticizing the security measures in the province, the Chief Minister harshly condemned the management in Islamabad. He stated that terrorism has been imposed on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and due to the federal government's failed policies, the province has consistently been engulfed in violence. Innocent people in my province are killed in military operations and drone strikes, which are dismissed as collateral damage, with the matter brushed aside with mere apologies. Only Imran Khan's policies will work; the welfare of the country and the nation lies within those policies.

Imran Khan Remains Imprisoned Since 2023

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since 2023 on charges of corruption and other allegations, which he and his party, PTI, claim are politically motivated. As Shehbaz Sharif's main political rival, Khan still retains a passionate support base that keeps him at the center of Pakistan's tumultuous political landscape.
