Elye Wahi Misses FIFA World Cup Opener Due to Visa Issues

Ivory Coast striker Elye Wahi will miss the FIFA World Cup opener against Germany due to unresolved visa issues. His absence comes amid a corruption investigation linked to unusual betting patterns surrounding a yellow card he received. The Ivorian Football Federation has expressed support for Wahi, emphasizing his importance to the national team. He will remain in the U.S. until the team returns for their next match against Curacao. This situation raises questions about the implications for Wahi's career and the team's performance in the tournament.

Elye Wahi's Absence from World Cup Match

Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi will not participate in his team's FIFA World Cup match against Germany on June 21, as he has not yet received the necessary authorization to enter Canada, according to the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) on Thursday.

Connection to Corruption Inquiry

This news follows reports linking Wahi to an investigation into alleged sports corruption. French authorities have identified unusual betting activities related to a yellow card he received while playing for Nice in Ligue 1 last month. Although Wahi has not been named as a suspect, he has not provided any comments on the matter.

A representative from the Marseille prosecutor's office confirmed that Wahi was detained on May 29 as part of an inquiry into organized fraud, sports corruption, handling stolen goods, and money laundering.

Support from the Ivorian Football Federation

The FIF has expressed unwavering support for Wahi, stating, "The FIF has not been officially informed of any legal or administrative actions against him." They also emphasized that Wahi is a vital member of the Ivory Coast national squad.

He will remain in the United States, where the team's training camp is located in Chester, Pennsylvania, until they return for their final group stage match against Curacao. FIF clarified, "The player will not be able to accompany the delegation to Canada due to pending administrative authorizations for his entry into the country."

Wahi's International Experience

Wahi has previously played for France at the under-21 level and made his senior debut for the Ivory Coast in March.

Ivory Coast kicked off their tournament with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador, while Curacao is set to face them after suffering a heavy 1-7 defeat against Germany.
