On Wednesday, Musk expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve. He stated, "As my designated term as a special government employee comes to an end, I want to thank President Trump for the chance to work on reducing government spending." He added that the mission of DOGE would continue to strengthen over time. This announcement came just a day after Musk publicly criticized Trump's legislative agenda.

In an interview with a media channel, Musk expressed disappointment over Trump's proposed "big beautiful bill," which includes extensive tax cuts and strict immigration enforcement. He labeled the bill as a "massive spending bill," arguing that it contradicts the goals of his department. Musk remarked, "This will increase the federal deficit and undermine DOGE's efforts." He also commented on the bill's branding, saying, "I believe a bill can be both big and beautiful, but I’m not sure it can be both at the same time."

In response to Musk's criticism, Trump addressed reporters briefly in the Oval Office. Defending the bill, he acknowledged the challenges in negotiating its aspects. Trump mentioned, "I’m not happy with some parts of it, but I’m excited about others." He suggested that there could still be amendments to the bill, stating, "We’ll see what happens. It has a long way to go."
