Elon Musk has acknowledged that he became overly engaged in politics while serving in the Trump administration, admitting he "got carried away." In a recent interview with The Economist, Musk discussed his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a cost-reduction initiative aimed at streamlining federal spending and restructuring government agencies. He remarked, "I think I got a little too involved in politics. I got carried away, frankly," although he did not specify what he regretted.

Despite this reflection, Musk defended the objectives of DOGE, asserting that the agency was established to eliminate unnecessary government expenditures and combat fraud. He stated, "We need to take a close look at spending and ensure that funds are utilized sensibly and not wasted or misappropriated."

Controversial Cuts to USAID

Musk also stood by the administration's cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which he had previously criticized harshly. He dismissed claims that these reductions led to humanitarian crises, asserting, "Zero people died because of DOGE." However, public health experts have challenged this claim, suggesting that the decrease in USAID-funded health programs has resulted in numerous preventable deaths, particularly among vulnerable children.

A study in The Lancet indicated that USAID initiatives have saved approximately 92 million lives over the last twenty years. Musk refuted these findings, suggesting that organizations losing funding often exaggerate the impact of such cuts. He characterized USAID as a "political organization" that supports regime changes abroad.

The Legacy of DOGE

DOGE officially ceased operations on July 4 after 18 months marked by legal disputes and significant backlash regarding its aggressive restructuring efforts. Established through an executive order on Trump's first day back in office, the agency aimed to identify and eliminate "waste, fraud, and abuse" within federal departments. During its tenure, over 272,000 federal employees exited government service, including nearly 140,000 who accepted deferred resignation offers. The agency also canceled millions in grants for scientific research, public health, and arts programs, while drastically reducing staff at agencies like the Social Security Administration.

Musk's Views on European Politics

In the interview, Musk defended his support for various right-wing political movements in Europe, claiming they have been misrepresented. He described these groups as "normal people" advocating for safer communities, stronger borders, and responsible government spending. When questioned about accusations of being anti-Muslim, Musk responded, "I’m against rape and murder," and criticized media portrayals of these issues. Despite stepping back from the administration, Musk continues to wield significant political influence, having previously invested millions in Trump's election campaign.
