Escalating Violence in West Bengal

In West Bengal, the lead-up to the second phase of voting has been marred by ongoing electoral violence. Just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled rally, the areas of Jagaddal and Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas transformed into battlegrounds on Sunday night. A fierce clash erupted between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), involving the use of bombs and gunfire, resulting in injuries to several individuals, including a CISF personnel.

Conflict Ignited by Political Disputes

Reports indicate that the violence stemmed from disputes over political flags and posters set up for the Prime Minister's visit. What began as a mere argument quickly escalated into a serious confrontation, with both factions engaging in stone-pelting and physical altercations. Local law enforcement struggled to manage the situation as tensions rapidly escalated.

BJP Claims Targeting of Campaign Materials

BJP activists alleged that TMC supporters vandalized their campaign materials in the Jagaddal area. As individuals from both sides gathered outside a police station, the situation deteriorated further, leading to additional clashes and unrest.

Attack on BJP Candidate's Residence

In a significant incident, reports emerged of an attack on the home of BJP candidate Pawan Kumar Singh. Singh is contesting the upcoming 2026 West Bengal elections from the Bhatpara assembly constituency. Allegedly, homemade bombs were thrown at his residence, causing panic in the neighborhood and damaging property. At least three individuals sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.

Claims of Gunfire and Injuries

Singh asserted that this violence was a direct result of tensions that began during a BJP meeting the previous day. He accused TMC members, led by a local councilor, of obstructing their campaign efforts. Furthermore, he claimed that after visiting the police station, his supporters were attacked with stones and locally made bombs.

CISF Personnel Injured in Clashes

In a serious allegation, Singh reported that gunfire was also involved during the clashes, resulting in injuries to a CISF personnel. BJP leader and former Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh also sustained injuries. During the first phase of voting on April 23, a remarkable 92.35% voter turnout was recorded across the state. The second phase of voting is scheduled for April 29, with vote counting set for May 4.
