Election Updates from Key Indian States

April marks the onset of election season in India, particularly in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. The counting of votes has commenced, and by the end of the day, the political landscape will become clearer regarding which parties will maintain or gain power.

In West Bengal, the contest is primarily between the Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with elections held for 294 seats. This election holds significant importance for two main reasons: first, West Bengal has historically sidelined the BJP, and second, Mamata Banerjee has taken a stand against the Election Commission regarding the removal of 8.9 million voters' names from the electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which accounts for approximately 11.6% of the state's electorate. This number slightly exceeds the margin by which the Trinamool Congress won in 2021.
