Election Commission Announces Key Police Appointments Ahead of Assam Assembly Elections

The Election Commission of India has made significant announcements regarding the Assam assembly elections set for April 9. Five senior police officers have been appointed to various districts, with immediate effect. The commission has also emphasized that these officials will not hold any election-related roles until the elections conclude. Additionally, retired IAS officer Manjeet Singh has been designated as a special observer to oversee the election preparations for 2026. Preparations for Assam Assembly Elections

On Monday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) revealed the deployment of five senior superintendents of police (SSPs) across various states in preparation for the Assam assembly elections scheduled for April 9. The commission mandated that these appointments take effect immediately, with compliance reports regarding the officials assuming their roles due by March 17.


In a letter to the Chief Secretary of Assam, the ECI specified the following assignments: Somalin Shubhadarshini (IPS) as SSP in Majuli, R. Sheetal Kumar (IPS) in South Salmara, Anchal Chauhan (IPS) in Sadiya, Sudhakar Singh (IPS) in Chirang, and Mohan Lal Meena (IPS-2016) in Dhemaji.


Restrictions on Transferred Officials

The letter further stated that the transferred officers would not be assigned to any election-related positions until the elections are concluded. Additionally, in a separate notification, the commission appointed retired IAS officer Manjeet Singh as a special observer for the Assam elections. The letter indicated that he would need to visit Assam periodically to oversee the preparations and operations for the 2026 assembly elections, providing necessary recommendations to the commission.


Coordination and Compliance

Manjeet Singh's responsibilities will be carried out in coordination with the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, who will provide all necessary materials, facilities, and protocol support. The letter also included the election schedule and a list of assembly constituencies for reference. Meanwhile, the Supreme Election Commission has issued strict instructions for the adherence to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for general elections and by-elections across six states.
