Efforts Intensify for Safe Return of Indians Amid Middle East Conflict
Safe Return Operations for Indians in the Gulf Region
In light of the ongoing conflict between the United States-Israel and Iran in the Middle East, efforts are underway to ensure the safe return of Indian nationals stranded in the Gulf region. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced late on Saturday, March 7, 2026, that over 52,000 Indian citizens have been successfully repatriated to India between March 1 and March 7, 2026.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the partial reopening of airspace in the region has facilitated this evacuation through commercial flights and other arrangements. Among those repatriated, 32,107 Indians returned via Indian airlines such as Air India and Indigo, while the remainder utilized foreign airlines and other flight options.
Key Highlights from the MEA Statement:
- The government is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia and the Gulf region.
- The safety and welfare of Indian citizens remain the top priority, with approximately 10 million Indians residing in the area.
- Special assistance is being provided to individuals stranded on transit or short-term visits.
- Additional flights will be organized in the coming days to ensure the safe return of remaining citizens.
- All Indians are urged to follow local authorities' directives, heed the advice of Indian embassies/missions, and register on the MADAD portal.
The evacuation is primarily taking place from major hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, where relief flights commenced following some airspace concessions. The Indian government has established a 24/7 special control room to assist stranded individuals and their families.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of External Affairs have maintained diplomatic communication with several countries to ensure the safe evacuation of Indians. This initiative is inspired by the spirit of 'Mission Swadesh,' which aims to bring every Indian abroad back home.
