ECB to Investigate England Players' Conduct During Ashes Series Break
ECB's Inquiry into England Players' Break in Noosa
Rob Key, the managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), is set to look into the England cricket team's mid-series break in Noosa, Queensland, prior to the third Test of the ongoing Ashes 2025 series at Adelaide Oval, which wrapped up on December 21. England's aspirations for the Ashes were thwarted after they faced their third consecutive defeat in the series.
England's Struggles in the Ashes Series
Before the Adelaide Test, England was already trailing 0-2, having lost the Perth and Brisbane Tests to Australia. The third Test was pivotal for the visitors to keep their hopes alive, but they fell short again, giving Australia an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
Chasing a target of 435 runs on the final day, England was dismissed for 352, despite notable contributions from Jamie Smith (60), Will Jacks (47), and Brydon Carse (39*). Australia secured an 82-run victory, retaining the Ashes for the third consecutive time since 2019.
Controversial Noosa Trip
With a 10-day gap between the second and third Tests, the England squad, including captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, took a break in Noosa. This decision came after an 8-wicket loss in Brisbane, leaving them trailing in the series. The players opted to relax instead of focusing on training and recovery, sharing moments on social media that showcased their beach activities.

Investigation into Allegations of Excessive Drinking
Following the 82-run defeat in Adelaide and the loss of the Ashes series, reports surfaced alleging that England players engaged in excessive drinking during their Noosa break, prompting an investigation by the ECB. Rob Key, who did not accompany the team, expressed his belief that the players behaved appropriately during their stay at the upscale resort.
Head coach Brendon McCullum defended the trip as a necessary break for the players to recharge amid a demanding tour schedule, which will conclude in January after the final Test.
Rob Key's Stance on Player Conduct
In light of the allegations regarding excessive drinking, Rob Key announced that he would investigate the claims and take necessary actions. He emphasized that the ECB does not condone excessive alcohol consumption among international players, although he maintained that the players behaved well in Noosa.
"If there are claims that our players engaged in excessive drinking, we will certainly look into that," Key stated. He further noted that while he has no issue with players enjoying a break, any unprofessional behavior would be unacceptable.
"I don't mind players having a glass of wine over dinner. Anything more than that, I think, is ridiculous," he added.
Criticism of England's Preparation
The England team's performance in the Ashes series has faced significant scrutiny, with critics questioning their preparation. Head coach Brendon McCullum acknowledged that the team may not have adequately prepared for the tour, which has led to disappointing results.
With their Ashes hopes dashed, England now looks ahead to two remaining Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, starting with the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26.
