In an impressive display, East Bengal has secured their place in the semi-finals of the Durand Cup. The Red and Gold Brigade faced off against the Indian Army Football Team on Sunday at Kolkata's Yuba Bharati Krirangan, clinching a 1-0 victory.


Taking advantage of a relatively less challenging opponent, head coach Antonio López Habas opted to test his defensive lineup. The backline featured Boris Singh, Lalchungnunga, Narendra Gahlot, and Joy Gupta.


Semi-Final Bound: The Red and Gold Brigade

The midfield was orchestrated by Rohit Kumar, Vishnu P.V., Daniel Ramirez, and Mohammed Basim Rashid, while David Lalhlansanga and Christopher James Ikonomidis spearheaded the attack. The first goal came in the 38th minute.


Ramirez delivered a precise pass to Ikonomidis on the left flank, who then crossed the ball for Vishnu to head it into the net, giving East Bengal a lead at halftime. Despite several missed opportunities earlier, the Army team struggled to penetrate the resilient Red and Gold defense.

Due to the injury, Habas substituted Vishnu at the beginning of the second half, bringing in Bipin Singh. A double substitution followed in the 57th minute, with Edmund Lalrindika replacing Ikonomidis and Jesin T.K. coming on for David.


Jesin soon found himself in a one-on-one with Army goalkeeper Bhabindra Malla Thakuri but hit the post, missing a crucial chance. In the 68th minute, Ramirez's shot from outside the box narrowly missed the target.
