Controversy Erupts Over Drug Trade in Nagaon Jail

Nagaon, Aug 30: A significant controversy has emerged at Nagaon Central Jail following the apprehension of two wardens by local police on Saturday.

The detained wardens, named Upen Hazarika and Biraj Patangia, are accused of smuggling prohibited substances, including ganja, into the facility and profiting from this illegal operation.

This action was prompted by an unannounced inspection conducted by Nagaon District Commissioner Debashish Sarma and Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Deka.

During their visit, they discovered substantial evidence indicating a flourishing drug trade within the prison walls. Investigations revealed that the wardens were supplying drugs to inmates in exchange for financial compensation, turning the jail into a center for this illicit activity.

Following the inspection, the District Commissioner reached out to the Jail Superintendent and the Home Department, urging them to take necessary actions. Ajit Doley, the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons for the Jorhat Range, has since visited the jail to initiate an inquiry into the situation.

The incident has incited public outrage, with community members calling for a thorough investigation and strict penalties for those implicated in the drug trade.

The Nagaon police have filed a case (No. 697/25) at the Nagaon Sadar Police Station and are actively pursuing further details. The arrested wardens are currently under interrogation.

In response to the situation, the State Government has suspended Mukul Bhuyan, the Superintendent of Central Jail, Nagaon, effective immediately.

This decision follows a report from the Inspector General of Prisons, Assam, based on the findings from the District Commissioner's surprise inspection on August 29.

During his suspension, he will receive a subsistence allowance as per FR 53 and will remain subject to the Assam Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965.
