New Delhi, June 13: The Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, announced on Saturday that the Department of Posts plans to introduce drone-based mail and parcel services in Assam within the next two to three months. This initiative follows the successful implementation of similar services in Himachal Pradesh.
According to an official statement, approximately 150 routes have been earmarked for drone mail delivery across both Himachal Pradesh and Assam.
The introduction of this service in Assam aims to address the longstanding issues of postal connectivity in challenging terrains and remote areas, significantly reducing delivery times and enhancing access to vital services for communities that are hard to reach.
The drone service was first launched on the Mandi–Rehardhar route in Himachal Pradesh, marking its operational debut.
Scindia highlighted that the initiative was inspired by feedback from Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, who emphasized the necessity for quicker and more dependable connectivity in remote regions—a challenge that is equally relevant in Assam's hilly and flood-affected districts.
In addition to improving speed, the service will provide real-time tracking and is designed to be a more environmentally friendly transportation option, as noted in the statement.
Officials anticipate that this initiative will enhance connectivity in remote and mountainous areas, thereby improving access to essential postal services and promoting greater social and economic inclusion.
The postal department emphasized that the drone service effectively addresses terrain-related obstacles while offering real-time tracking and an eco-friendly transport solution—benefits that are particularly crucial for Assam, where floods and challenging geography often hinder last-mile connectivity.
