Dramatic Wedding Incident Highlights Ongoing Dowry Issues in India
A Shocking Turn of Events at a Wedding
Despite the fact that both giving and receiving dowry are considered crimes in India, the practice continues to thrive, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Here, dowry demands have become almost customary, with grooms' families presenting a list of their requirements to the brides' families before the wedding. In many cases, if the bride's family fails to meet these demands, the marriage is at risk of falling apart even before it begins. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for brides to face harassment from their in-laws due to their inability to fulfill dowry expectations. This practice has become a curse for society, yet there seems to be no change in sight amidst the evolving landscape of India.
A recent incident in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh serves as a stark reminder of the dowry menace. Here, the bride's family taught a lesson to a groom who was demanding a bullet motorcycle instead of a regular bike as dowry. The bride's relatives not only confronted the groom but also physically assaulted him and held him captive until the police arrived. A video of this incident has since gone viral on social media.
The incident took place in the village of Kesariya Salimpur on May 17, during the wedding of Naseem Ahmed's daughter. The groom, Mohammad Amir, was seated on stage as the wedding rituals commenced. However, things took a turn for the worse during the meal when the groom insisted on receiving a bullet motorcycle instead of a bike. The bride's family initially agreed to this demand and even provided a check for two lakh rupees for the motorcycle. However, the groom and his father insisted that the bride could only leave with them once the motorcycle was delivered.
Tensions escalated quickly, transforming what was supposed to be a joyous occasion into a scene of chaos. When the motorcycle was not immediately available, the groom and his father began to hurl insults and even tore up the check given by the bride's father.
The situation deteriorated to the point where the bride's family, with the help of villagers, detained the groom and gave him a severe beating. Upon learning of the groom's behavior, the bride refused to go to his home.
The police arrived at the scene after being alerted by the bride's family, rescuing the groom and his father. Subsequently, a case of dowry harassment was filed against the groom, his father, and five others. In retaliation, the groom also filed a complaint against the bride's family for assault. Thus, a marriage that began with vows of togetherness ended abruptly due to the greed associated with dowry.
