Dr. Janak Raj, a prominent neurosurgeon and MLA from Pangi, has voiced serious concerns regarding the recent altercation at IGMC Shimla, labeling it as “not merely an isolated incident but a clear indication of the government's shortcomings in managing healthcare.”

He accused the government of evading accountability by penalizing doctors, misleading the public, and neglecting the reality that an overwhelmed healthcare system is demoralizing medical professionals and exacerbating patient distress.

Dr. Raj posed several critical questions:

  • Are patients being treated as criminals?

  • Have hospitals become places of distress, where multiple patients are crammed into a single bed and left waiting indefinitely for tests and surgeries?

  • Are doctors and patients being pitted against each other?

He pointed out that hospitals in the state are plagued by mismanagement due to:

  1. Severe staff shortages

  2. Extended waiting times

  3. Inadequate security measures

  4. Lack of a grievance redressal mechanism

“This situation is a direct consequence of the government's policy failures—both doctors and patients are suffering, and the root cause is official negligence,” Dr. Raj emphasized.

He further questioned the government's priorities, stating: “In the Assembly, we inquired why the government allocated ₹180 crore for six robots instead of enhancing hospital facilities and addressing staff shortages. Was this decision aligned with the needs of the populace? In a democracy, elected officials are supposed to serve the public interest, as mandated by the Constitution.”
