Silchar, June 18: Cachar Police apprehended a doctor after rescuing a minor girl who had been missing for almost three months, along with two other victims, from a hotel and restaurant in Lathigram, within the jurisdiction of Udharbond Police Station.

The suspect, J.P. Das, was detained during a late-night operation at Parijat Hotel and Restaurant on the Mahasadak road on Tuesday night.

As per Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal and Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Manas Saikia, authorities acted on a tip-off received around 10:30 PM regarding suspicious activities at the hotel, prompting an immediate raid.

Following a complaint from the girl's family, Udharbond Police Station registered Case No. 61/2026, invoking various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.

“Investigators are looking into how the victims ended up at the hotel, whether they were subjected to any form of exploitation, and if the hotel management was aware of the situation,” stated Pal.

Authorities are also exploring the potential links to a broader trafficking network or organized crime syndicate.

In a related note, it was disclosed that Das had previously faced arrest in a case involving impersonation as a doctor, with a chargesheet already filed against him.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia emphasized that the investigation is at a critical juncture and assured that stringent legal measures would follow based on the findings. He added, “The rescue of the minor and the application of anti-trafficking and POCSO laws significantly heighten the seriousness of this case.”
