Shimla: A physician at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, faces serious allegations of assaulting a patient in the pulmonary medicine department, resulting in a bleeding nose and other injuries.
The incident has sparked significant anger among the patient's family, who organized a protest outside the hospital, demanding the immediate termination of the involved doctor.
The patient, named Arjun, hails from Kupvi in the Chopal region of Shimla district and is employed as a teacher at a private academy. He had visited IGMC for an endoscopy procedure. According to his relatives, the doctor exhibited rude behavior and quickly escalated to violence.
Family members claim that the doctor struck the patient multiple times in the face. A video, allegedly captured by bystanders, shows the doctor hitting the patient, with blood visible from his nose. Following the altercation, the patient's relatives chanted slogans against the doctor and the hospital administration, accusing them of negligence and misconduct.
According to the family's account, after the endoscopy, a doctor instructed the patient to rest on a bed. While he was lying down, another masked doctor reportedly approached him and acted inappropriately. When the attendants informed the doctor that the patient was advised to rest, he allegedly became aggressive and attacked him. The family also mentioned that the patient attempted to defend himself during the confrontation.
Law enforcement arrived at the hospital as tensions rose and took the patient and his family members to the police station to document their statements. The management of IGMC announced that an investigation into the incident has commenced, and accountability will be determined once the inquiry is concluded.
Hospital officials stated that they are reviewing all aspects of the incident, including the behavior of both the doctor and the patient. They indicated that further actions would be based on the investigation's outcomes.
