DMK MPs Discuss Key Issues in Virtual Meeting from London
Significant Proposals Passed in DMK Meeting
On Thursday, a virtual meeting of DMK MPs was held from London, presided over by party leader M.K. Stalin. During this session, several resolutions were adopted, including a commitment to raise issues related to the Mekedatu dam, Tamil Nadu's rights over the Cauvery water, and the state's autonomy during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. According to DMK sources, the party has decided to continue opposing the current form of the delimitation bill, which is based on population and linked to women's reservation. The party will await a new bill and make decisions based on the recommendations provided within it.
Concerns Over Cauvery Water Allocation
One of the initial proposals accused the Karnataka government of refusing to release Tamil Nadu's share of water from the Cauvery River. This refusal has delayed the opening of the Mettur dam, causing difficulties for farmers. The DMK reiterated its opposition to the proposed Mekedatu dam on the Cauvery and demanded that the central government establish a tribunal to resolve this dispute.
Commitment to State Rights
In another proposal, the DMK stated that its MPs would continue to raise issues concerning Tamil Nadu's rights, federalism, and constitutional values in both houses of Parliament. After the meeting, Stalin took to social media to express that every DMK MP would act as the voice and conscience of the people of Tamil Nadu.
Review of Central Laws
Stalin also mentioned that the party would review the laws introduced by the central government from the perspective of state autonomy and constitutional integrity. Sources indicate that he discussed the Congress party's inconsistent stance during the meeting, stating that Congress, which benefited from DMK's support in elections, has betrayed the party in its quest for power. He instructed all DMK MPs to maintain distance from Congress, declaring that the relationship between DMK and Congress is now over.
