DMK Legislator Accuses Tamil Nadu Government of Authoritarianism

Allegations Against the State Government

Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu), August 4 - G.V. Markandeyan, a legislator from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has accused the state government of operating with a 'dictatorial mindset' and attempting to strip away democratic rights. He made these remarks after being released on bail on Tuesday. Markandeyan, who represents Vilathikulam, stated that imprisonment is not a new experience for the DMK.

He recalled that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had to face jail time during anti-Hindi movements to protect Tamil unity, and current party leaders also spent a year in prison during the farmers' rights movement. Speaking to reporters, Markandeyan asserted that prison bars cannot break their spirit, and they will stand firm. He emphasized that the party is prepared to face 'thousands of jails' rather than have its ideas suppressed.

While incarcerated, Markandeyan mentioned that he kept himself updated on political developments related to opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin. He noted that despite this, the assembly session is set to commence tomorrow. He expressed that attempts to intimidate and silence them will not prevent their voices in the assembly.

There will be serious repercussions... Markandeyan was arrested on July 20 by the Tuticorin District Crime Branch (DCB) police based on a complaint from an official of the TVK. The complaint alleged that during a DMK public meeting in Kovilpatti on July 18, Markandeyan made defamatory and threatening remarks, claiming that DMK legislators would 'break the bones' of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inside the assembly.

After his initial bail applications were rejected by the principal district and sessions court in Tuticorin, the Madras High Court granted him conditional bail on August 3. Following his release from Palayamkottai Central Jail, the legislator compared his situation to historical struggles and referenced prominent leaders who have endured imprisonment.
