Seat Allocation Agreement Reached
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have finalized their seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections scheduled for April 23. Under the agreement, the CPI(M), a key member of the DMK-led secular progressive alliance, will contest five seats. Meanwhile, the Congress party will run for 28 seats within the same coalition.
Details of the Agreement
A press release issued by the parties indicated that discussions took place today (March 23, 2026) between DMK President and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and P. Shanmugam, Secretary of the CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Committee. It was decided that the CPI(M) would contest five assembly seats in the upcoming elections.
Opposition Coalition's Seat Distribution
The opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has also finalized its seat-sharing arrangement for the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly. According to the agreement, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) will contest 178 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 27 seats, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) will contest 18 seats, and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam will contest 11 seats.
Election Timeline
Voting in Tamil Nadu will take place in a single phase on April 23, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The current assembly's term will end on May 10. In addition to the ruling DMK-led alliance and the NDA, actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam will also be contesting in the elections.
