A Grand Showcase of Artistry in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: In light of the significant turnout expected for the Rath Yatra, a week-long handicraft fair commenced on Thursday, aimed at showcasing India's artisanal talents and uplifting marginalized communities.

The event, named 'Shilp Samagam Mela', was inaugurated at Biju Patnaik Playground, Baramunda, by Amit Yadav, the secretary of the department. This fair will run until July 2.

During the inauguration, Yadav emphasized that the Mela acts as a national platform designed to empower artisans and entrepreneurs from Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, 'Safai Mitras', and Denotified Tribes (DNTs).

He noted that this fair provides a valuable opportunity for these groups to display and sell their creations, thereby fostering economic independence.

"The Shilp Samagam Mela transcends being merely a marketplace; it is a celebration of craftsmanship, culture, and resilience. It reinforces our commitment to 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' by supporting those who require it the most," Yadav remarked.

This year's fair features over 75 artisans from 14 different states, presenting a wide array of handicrafts, handlooms, and handmade products. This initiative is part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to assist artisans by providing them with direct access to markets.

A significant aspect of the event is the promotion of the Traditional Artisans' Upliftment Livelihood Programme (TULIP), which was introduced by Virendra Kumar, the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, on November 5, 2024, during the Shilp Samagam Mela at 'Dilli Haat' in New Delhi.

TULIP aims to empower traditional artisans by broadening their market reach both nationally and internationally. The program focuses on ensuring sustainable income through the promotion of artisan-crafted products and supporting their livelihoods.

Alongside the crafts exhibition, the Mela also features cultural evenings with performances from regional artists and a culinary zone that offers authentic dishes from various parts of India, providing visitors with a rich and immersive experience.
