Dimple Mehta Elected as New Mayor of Mira Bhayandar Amidst Controversy
Dimple Mehta Takes Office as Mayor
In Mira Bhayandar, Maharashtra, Dimple Mehta from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected as the new mayor. Her election has sparked significant opposition from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES), who are demanding that only a Marathi-speaking leader should hold the mayoral position. The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation consists of 95 elected representatives, with the BJP holding a dominant position with 78 seats. The Congress has 13 representatives, while the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) has 3, and a rebel candidate from the BJP has also won. Notably, the rebel councilor Anil Patil has pledged his support to the BJP.
Opposition Forms Alliance Against BJP Candidate
To challenge the BJP's strength in the mayoral election, the Congress and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) formed a united front. The BJP nominated Dimple Mehta, who is the sister-in-law of senior leader Narendra Mehta, as their candidate. In contrast, the Congress-Shiv Sena alliance put forward Rubina Khatun for the same position.
Political Turmoil Over Marathi vs. Non-Marathi Mayor
The selection of a non-Marathi mayor has led to a major controversy. The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti has announced protests and a three-kilometer march in opposition to Dimple Mehta's appointment. The committee argues that it is essential for the mayor to be Marathi-speaking to represent the sentiments of the city's majority. The BJP has dismissed these claims, asserting that the protesting groups include members of the Shiv Sena and MNS. The party contends that the objections are rooted in political rivalry rather than linguistic pride.
