Tirkey Supports Manpreet's Ambition

Dilip Tirkey, the president of Hockey India and a former captain of the Indian team, expressed his enthusiasm for Manpreet Singh potentially breaking his long-held record of 412 international caps. He views this as a promising development for Indian hockey's future. "I would be thrilled to see Manpreet surpass my record. Records are made to be broken," Tirkey remarked during the RevSportz Trailblazers 4.0 event.


Reflecting on his own achievements, Tirkey shared insights about reaching over 400 international matches, a milestone that made him the first player globally to achieve such a feat. He emphasized the commitment and fitness required to maintain a long career in the sport. "Being the first to cross 400 international caps is a significant achievement for me. It requires immense dedication and consistent performance for the nation," he noted.


"If Manpreet continues his current form and stays fit, he has a strong chance not only to surpass my record but also to bring further accolades to India. It would be remarkable to witness another Indian player become the most capped athlete during my tenure as President of Hockey India," he added.


Tirkey also acknowledged the Hockey India League's contribution to enhancing the sport and providing opportunities for emerging talents.


Manpreet Singh Discusses Team's Aspirations

Returning to the training camp, Indian midfielder Manpreet Singh shared insights about the team's focus as they approach a pivotal year for Indian hockey. He recognized that recent performances have highlighted areas needing improvement. "I am back in camp and putting in the effort. This year is crucial for us. It was a wake-up call to identify where we need to enhance our game. The team's morale is high, and everyone is eager to work on our weaknesses," Manpreet stated.


He emphasized the significance of the upcoming Asian Games, which serve as a direct qualification route for the Olympic Games. "The Asian Games are vital for us as they present our opportunity to qualify for the Olympics. We now understand the areas we need to focus on, and we have time to make improvements before the major tournaments," he explained.


Sardar Singh on Professional Development

Former Indian captain Sardar Singh praised the professional framework that has evolved around Indian hockey in recent years. "Hockey India has been operating very professionally for the last six or seven years. We have excellent coaches from the junior to senior levels, which has significantly aided player development," Sardar remarked.


"The experience of senior players is invaluable on the field and helps younger athletes integrate into the team. Coaches are adept at recognizing when players should peak and how to prepare them for significant competitions," he added.


Rani Rampal on Women's Hockey Advancements

Former captain Rani Rampal addressed the advancements in women's hockey and the transition phase the team has been experiencing. "Transitions within a team take time. Young players require exposure and match experience to develop," Rani noted.


Commenting on the Indian Women's Hockey Team's recent second-place finish at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, she said, "Competing in front of a home crowd is challenging. While there is excitement, there is also pressure. This team has a good blend of youth and experience, and I am optimistic about our performance in the World Cup as well."


Hockey India League's Positive Influence

Tamal Ghosal, Chairman of Shrachi Sports, discussed the Hockey India League's impact. "The most significant advantage of the Hockey India League is that it has provided opportunities for new players. Many young athletes have had the chance to showcase their skills on a larger platform, which is crucial for their growth," Ghosal stated.
