Dibrugarh's Maritime Skills Centre to Open by 2026, Promises Job Opportunities
Centre of Excellence on Maritime Skills
Guwahati, Jan 3: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced that the highly anticipated Centre of Excellence focused on Maritime Skills in Dibrugarh is set to be completed by 2026.
In a conversation with a local news outlet, Sonowal emphasized that this centre will provide young individuals in the region with the necessary maritime skills, enabling them to secure employment opportunities both domestically and internationally.
Despite the maritime sector offering numerous job prospects, many youths from Assam and the Northeast have been unable to access these opportunities due to a lack of relevant skills. The establishment of the Centre of Excellence is expected to address this gap.
Additionally, the shipbuilding facility at Pandu is projected to be finished within this year, further boosting the maritime industry in the region.
Sonowal highlighted that the development of new jetties and terminals will facilitate smoother vessel movement across the state's waterways, with new foreign barges expected to commence operations soon. These initiatives are anticipated to enhance the transportation of cargo, cruise, and passenger vessels.
The Minister expressed confidence that, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam is on track to become a leading state in the country.
He also mentioned that by 2026, the Central Government will prioritize the quality and timely completion of ongoing projects in the Northeast.
Sonowal noted the significant progress Assam has made during the NDA Government's tenure, recalling a time when fear of extremism deterred people from visiting the state. He stated that the situation has dramatically improved, with most militant groups now engaging in peace agreements with the Government.
Connectivity is crucial for regional development, which is why the NDA Government is focusing on enhancing rail, road, waterway, and internet connectivity in the Northeast, fostering accelerated growth in the area. He concluded by stating that the Northeast has been integrated into the broader narrative of India, boosting the self-confidence of its residents.
