Dhubri Eviction Drive Sparks Outrage from MP Rakibul Hussain

The recent eviction drive in Dhubri has sparked outrage from MP Rakibul Hussain, who condemned the actions of the district administration as inhumane. He highlighted the plight of long-term residents, many of whom possess legal land documents, and criticized the lack of proper notice before the eviction. Hussain's appeal to the Assam Government to reconsider the eviction, allegedly linked to a thermal power project by the Adani Group, has drawn attention to the broader implications for human rights and legal protections. The operation has displaced nearly 2,000 families, raising concerns about transparency and justice in the process.

Dhubri Eviction Controversy

Dhubri, July 11: In the wake of a significant eviction operation in Dhubri, Member of Parliament Rakibul Hussain visited the affected villages in the Chapar region on Thursday and expressed strong disapproval of the extensive eviction carried out by the district authorities on July 8.

During a press conference, the prominent Congress figure described the eviction as 'inhumane and monstrous,' claiming he faced initial barriers to accessing the evicted areas.

“These individuals have resided here for 60 to 70 years, many possess government land allotments, valid patta documents, and are consistent taxpayers. This eviction is a grave injustice — the Almighty will not forgive it,” Hussain stated.

The MP further accused the district administration of breaching judicial orders. “The Gauhati High Court explicitly mandated that a minimum notice of 15 days must be provided prior to any eviction. Contempt proceedings should be initiated against all officials who ignored this directive,” he emphasized.

Pointing out the broader repercussions on nearby communities, Hussain remarked, "In certain villages, transformers have been removed, leaving entire communities in darkness. What offense have they committed to warrant this?” he questioned.

Hussain made a strong appeal to the Assam Government, cautioning them against being influenced by corporate interests. He alleged that the eviction was aimed at clearing land for a proposed thermal power project, reportedly linked to the Adani Group.

On July 8, the Dhubri district administration executed a large-scale eviction in the area.

Over 3,500 bighas of land in Santoshpur, Charuwabakhra, and Chirakuta villages under Chapar Circle were cleared to facilitate the upcoming power project.

The operation commenced early on Tuesday, conducted under heavy security with more than 100 bulldozers and armed personnel present. Nearly 2,000 families were displaced during this drive.

Calling for empathy and adherence to legal protocols, Hussain urged the police and civil administration to operate within the law and respect court rulings. “As an opposition member, I assure that we will advocate for land allocation to all landless individuals across the state wherever such unjust evictions have occurred, once we regain power,” he concluded.

The eviction initiative has faced significant backlash from various groups, opposition parties, and activists, who argue that the action lacked transparency, violated human rights, and ignored legal protections for long-term residents.
