Devon Conway Excluded from ODI Opener Against India Due to Injury

New Zealand's Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first ODI against India due to a head injury sustained during training. The incident occurred when he collided with teammate Matt Henry, raising concerns about his condition. Captain Mitchell Santner confirmed that while Henry is fine, Conway's injury adds to the team's existing injury woes, with other players also sidelined. Tim Seifert is expected to replace Conway in the lineup. The ODI series begins on November 4, following a competitive T20I series where New Zealand made a comeback after initially trailing. Both teams are eager to start the ODI leg on a strong note.

Devon Conway Excluded from ODI Opener

On November 3, it was announced that New Zealand's opener, Devon Conway, will not participate in the first ODI against India, set to take place in Auckland on Wednesday. This decision follows a head injury he sustained during a training session on Tuesday, resulting from a collision with fast bowler Matt Henry at Eden Park, as reported by Cricinfo.

New Zealand's Injury Woes

New Zealand's captain, Mitchell Santner, confirmed that Matt Henry passed his concussion tests and is fine, but Conway's situation is more serious, necessitating immediate medical attention. Santner remarked, "Not yet. I think Matt went through his concussion thing. He seems okay, but Dev's been raced off-premises. So, yeah, it didn't look too good, actually, that collision," when speaking to reporters.

Squad Changes and Potential Replacements

Conway's injury adds to New Zealand's mounting injury list, which already includes Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra, both sidelined due to hamstring and shoulder injuries, respectively. Wicketkeeper/batter Tim Seifert, initially slated for just the first two ODIs, has now been included for the entire series as of Monday.

Santner suggested that Seifert is likely to step in for Conway in the lineup, calling the opener's potential absence a significant loss. He praised Conway's skills in the 50-over format and referred to the training incident as an unfortunate accident. "Yeah, I guess he's [Seifert] the back-up batter in our squad. So it'll probably be a direct swap if Dev's unavailable, which is a shame. He [Conway] is obviously very good in one-day cricket and, you know, was biding his time in the T20 series. And, yeah, I guess another one of those freak accidents that happens," Santner added.

Looking Ahead to the Series

The ODI series is set to commence on November 4 in Auckland, following an exciting five-match T20I series. India secured a commanding 3-0 lead after winning the first three matches, but New Zealand made a strong comeback, winning the last two games to conclude the series at 3-2. The hosts will aim to maintain their winning streak into the ODI series, while India seeks to start the 50-over segment of the tour with a victory.
