Indian cricketer Devdutt Padikkal expressed immense joy after achieving his first Test century, emphasizing the importance of having a strategic mindset when facing spin bowlers. In the absence of regular number three Sai Sudharsan, Padikkal made a significant impact by scoring a swift 167 runs off 230 balls, including 15 boundaries and a six.

'A Dream Come True': Padikkal Discusses Spin Tactics

After the match, Padikkal shared with broadcasters, "This moment has been a dream of mine. Over the past two years, I've dedicated myself to ensuring that when the opportunity arises, I can perform exceptionally well. I'm thrilled to have done just that." He elaborated on his aggressive approach against spin, stating, "It's crucial to have specific plans in mind when facing spin bowlers. You can't simply react; you need to be proactive."

He continued, "Having a few shots ready to play helps apply pressure on the bowler. Over the last year, we've focused on leveraging our strengths to regain that pressure."

Desire for Big Scores

Padikkal conveyed that he possesses a clear understanding of his objectives, which boosts his confidence in footwork. He noted the inspiration drawn from fellow cricketers from Karnataka who have achieved significant runs, motivating him to replicate their success.

"I aim to commit fully to every shot I play, even defensively, which enhances my footwork. Regarding converting hundreds into bigger scores, it's simply about the desire to score more. I love batting, and reaching 100 can sometimes lead to a sense of relief," he explained.

"However, the next 20-30 balls are crucial for me to maintain focus. Once I get past the initial 10 balls after reaching 100, my task becomes much easier. Observing many cricketers from Karnataka score big has fueled my ambition to do the same."

Pitch Conditions and Personal Reflections

Padikkal mentioned that the pitch would likely start deteriorating after a couple of sessions. He noted, "In Galle, the pitch tends to quicken up significantly on the third and fourth days, which should benefit our bowlers as well."

"As for celebrating a big performance, not really (smiles). I'm quite exhausted, so I plan to head back to bed now," he concluded.
